John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck was an American writer. Steinbeck was born in 1902, in Salinas Valley, California. Living in a small rural town, many of his books are inspired by his surroundings of local forests, farms and fields. He attended Stanford University but never left with a degree. He then attempted to get his work published in New York City but after failing he returned to California. He married twice and had two children. In his lifetime he wrote 27 books, including his greatest novels ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ (1939) and ‘Of Mice and Men’ (1937). In 1962 aged 60 he received the Nobel Prize for Literature.

In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck the central setting is the ranch where the main protagonists, George Milton and Lennie Small find work and live. The setting is important because it gives the reader an insight into the characters lifestyle and plays a role in the movement of the story.
